Notes and Quotes:

  • “Not only do you have a culture but when your culture comes in contact with other cultures it almost always wins.”
  • “Sadly still in a lot of white evangelical spaces in particular which is what I’ve been formed anything that’s outside of just spiritual justice of us being made right with God. Anything that touches the social realm is often seen as a social gospel that’s outside of the core dimension. Not only outside of the core dimension of the gospel but even potentially a threat to it.”
  • “When you study race outside of the church you find that people are very antagonistic about religion. Because the general perspective is that religion has made the matters way worse than they already were and has been a complicit partner to a lot of the chaos that’s been created.”
  • “I started realizing theJesus I had grown up in white evangelical spaces wasn’t big enough to have these conversations. When I learned about race outside of the church I realized that without Jesus there’s no way to have these conversations.”
  • “I would say the ideology of white supremacy is one of the greatest threats to the soul of our country and most white Christians have no idea how to think about that biblically.”

  • “So when I’m talking about this to Christians I say if there’s one word you’d associate with the word race it should be the word evil.”
  • “The two greatest sins of our Western world, our nation within it that the two greatest sins we ever committed was the minimum displacement, some would call genocide of Native people. Then the system of slavery. The system of Transatlantic slavery…”
  • “God says human value is tied to our image in likeness of God. Race says that your value is not tied to the Imago Dei, it’s tied to where you fall on the racial hierarchy.”
  • “Implicit bias is we have these images of goodness that we associate with whiteness and images of badness we associate with blackness.”
  • “Race is a principality or a stronghold that gets into hearts and minds in terms of who’s valuable and who’s not.”
  • “So it’s the accidental forms of racism–the unnamed forms that actually become more dangerous in a lot of ways.”
  • “Satan’s native tongue is that of lies…so anywhere there’s an individual lie there’s something demonic about that.
  • “But unfortunately, many of us have been brought up in a system that doesn’t just ignore the past it actually retells the story of the past.”
  • “Ray Balky says, ‘if you read the Bible with a middle-class lens you’ll always get a middle-class application.’”
